Age 7, 2nd grade

After coming up with yet another silly dance routine or dumb comedy sketch, I ran into the living room to show my mom.

I stopped when I noticed she was quietly wiping away tears.

“What did I do?”

“I wish I was half as confident and out going as you are when I was a kid. What you do doesn’t come easy to every one. Don’t take it for granted”

I only rode the bus to school in 6th and 7th grades.

For those two years my mom stood at my bus stop with me every morning.

At first I was mortified. It was the last stop before school which meant every one would see my mom. And I was a grown up. In middle school.

Gawd.

After about a week I stopped caring. It was just me and my mom for 10 - 15 minutes every single morning. She could have driven me to school in less time but she didn’t. She stood on the corner and hung out with me til the bus came.

My mom made the dance recital costumes for every single person in my tap class. We did a dance to singing in the rain and she made silver raincoats lined with yellow sequins, matching hats and yellow, fake leather “rain boots” that went over our tap shoes.

They were completely on par with all of the catalog bought sequined frocks that the rest of the dance classes wore.
